Undeads, formerly CryptoUndeads, was a year-long creative exploration of on-chain digital identities. It was originally ideated to bring energy and collector spirit to the Solana blockchain, at a time when morale was low and channels were quiet.
For those who want the raw numbers, here are those stats:
Total of 10,000 minted Undeads
Only 10 entirely unique legendaries
Buyers include (who founded Doodles), and (of 6529 Capital)
There are 123 handmade collection traits (492 with theoretical variants)
4,492,800 total theoretical combinations
Over 100,000 test generations for QA
First, original 10K collection inscribed on Solana
Inspired by CryptoPunks on Ethereum, we wanted to make sure that the collection represented a broad range of aesthetics and styles, allowing anyone to find a piece that resonates with them. This meant a deep exploration of other successful collections and engaging with collectors across crypto.
Beyond trait expression, we had to create a base concept that felt distinct and timeless. There were, in all, about 5 entirely unique collections created and scrapped before landing on the final published concept that we all know and love.
Here are two early concepts that were explored:
Another consideration for us was rarity curve, and making sure that there was no heavy contrast between "rare" and "common". The implementation of various body types (Skeleton, Zombie, Ghoul, Vampire, Phantom, Inferno, and Ghost) with traits that adapted to their style, created a deep and interesting rarity curve that many collectors have enjoyed.
A noteworthy, but often overlooked, detail is that traits on Phantom, Inferno, and Ghost body types were all adjusted by hand to better match the color of those bases. This is why there is a theoretic total of 492 traits when factoring in alternative versions of each.
The concept design was led by , with art advisory from , and pixel artists and .
